Tips & Tricks to Make the Sweet and Sour Mushrooms

Ready to give this recipe a shot? Here are some tips and tricks you might want to take note of.

  • I used button mushrooms for this recipe, but you could also try using other kinds of mushrooms. Dried shiitake mushrooms are great because they have a meaty texture. Cremini mushrooms work amazingly well for this recipe as well.
  • I used sugar as a sweetener for this recipe, but if you don’t want to use it, you can add a splash of honey instead.
  • Maple syrup is another great choice if you are looking for a healthy and natural sweetener.
  • To make the dish nice and saucy, you can add a simple cornflour slurry made with a teaspoon of corn flour and some water and cook it for a couple of extra minutes until the sauce thickens.
  • To add a bit of heat, you can also add some Sriracha or any other hot sauce of your choice.

Serving Ideas & Suggestions

The sweet and sour mushrooms can be enjoyed as a side dish with any of your Asian mains. I love serving them with some fried rice or noodles, but they can work wonderfully well with almost any Asian inspired dish.

In fact, you can also pair them with some cauliflower rice or Thai spicy egg fried rice.
