Jackfruit curry gyro is a unique and delicious vegetarian dish that combines the flavors of Indian and Greek cuisine. It's a plant-based take on the traditional Greek gyro, which is typically made with meat.

There was a time when I hated curry. But then, slowly, I developed my taste for it and never looked back. One of my all-time favorite is the jackfruit curry that my mom made.

Tender jackfruits sauteed with onions and curry spices and cooked to perfection is my idea of a perfect jackfruit curry. And when used as a filling in pita bread, this humble curry uplifts the flavor of a wrap or gyro wrap. Here is my version of the jackfruit curry gyro.

Tips and Tricks

To make jackfruit curry gyro, you'll need to start by preparing the jackfruit. Jackfruit is a large, spiky fruit that is native to Southeast Asia. When cooked, it has a texture that is similar to pulled pork or chicken. To prepare it, you'll need to remove the tough outer skin and shred the flesh into small pieces. If you are not familiar with handling young jackfruits, then I strongly suggest using canned or frozen ones.

Once the jackfruit is prepared, you can start making the curry sauce. This is typically made with a variety of Indian spices, such as cumin, coriander, turmeric, and garam masala, along with coconut milk and tomato paste. The jackfruit is then added to the sauce and simmered until it's tender and flavorful.

To assemble the jackfruit curry gyro, you'll need to fill a pita bread with the jackfruit curry, along with some fresh greens, sliced onions, and a dollop of yogurt sauce. The yogurt sauce is made with Greek yogurt, lemon juice, and herbs, such as dill and mint. My version uses a little sugar to add some sweet and sour punch to this spicy gyro dish.

One of the main highlights of this dish is that it's plant-based, making it a great option for vegetarians and vegans. Jackfruit is also a good source of fiber and antioxidants, while the spices used in the curry sauce offer anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties.

In addition, the gyro is a convenient and portable meal that can be enjoyed on the go or at home. It's packed with delicious flavors and textures, making it a satisfying and healthy meal option.

Overall, jackfruit curry gyro is a unique and flavorful dish that combines the best of Indian and Greek cuisine. It's easy to make, plant-based, and packed with nutrients, making it a great option for anyone looking for a healthy and delicious meal. What else do you need? Let’s get cooking.

  • 1 teaspoon of coriander
  • ½ teaspoon of turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon of garam masala
  • 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
  • 1 can of coconut milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Pita bread
  • Fresh greens, such as lettuce or spinach
  • Sliced onion
  • Greek yogurt

  • Fresh herbs, such as dill and mint

Instructions

  1. Heat the coconut oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté for 3-4 minutes, until softened.
  2. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger and cook for another minute.

  4. Add the shredded jackfruit to the skillet and stir to coat with the spice mixture.

  1. Add the tomato paste and coconut milk to the skillet and stir well to combine. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the jackfruit is tender and the sauce has thickened. I prefer to dry the curry sauce and make the jackfruit filling really semi-saucy.
  2. While the jackfruit curry sauce is thickening, prepare the yogurt sauce. In a small bowl, mix together Greek yogurt, lemon juice, and fresh herbs.
  3. To assemble the gyro, warm the pita bread in a microwave or oven. Fill the pita with the jackfruit curry, fresh greens, sliced onion, and a dollop of yogurt sauce.
  4. Enjoy your delicious Jackfruit Curry Gyro!

Note: You can also add other toppings of your choice, such as sliced tomatoes or cucumbers, to your gyro.
