This chicken in cream sauce is the perfect recipe to make over the weekend and enjoy with the entire family. 

The juicy chicken teams are beautifully with the rich and creamy sauce and together, it is really a match made in heaven. 

The dish comes together super quick and you’ll need just a few simple kitchen staples to put it together.

Ingredients For the Recipe

You will need two sets of ingredients to make the chicken in cream sauce. 

For the chicken breast

  • Chicken breast: 2-3
  • Salt: 1 tsp
  • Black pepper powder: 1 tsp
  • Oil: 2 tbsp
  • Garlic cloves (crushed): 3

For the sauce

  • Butter: 2 tbsp
  • Garlic (minced): 2 tbsp
  • Chilies (minced): 1 tbsp
  • Onions (finely chopped): ½ cup
  • Chicken broth: ½ cup
  • Cream: ½ cup
  • Coriander leaves (finely chopped): 3 tbsp
  • Garam masala powder: ½ tbsp
  • Nutmeg powder: ¼ tsp
  • Prepared chickens and garlic cloves

How to Make the Chicken in Cream Sauce

Once you have all the ingredients ready, here is what you will need to do to make the chicken in cream sauce. 

Take the chicken breast and make diagonal slits on them.

Sprinkle salt and pepper on them and properly marinate them with the seasoning. Keep aside.

Heat oil in a pan and add in teh crushed garlic cloves. Saute and cook them for 40-45 seconds.

Add in the marinated chicken breasts. Cook each side for about 1 minute. Once done, keep the chicken breasts and the garlic cloves aside.

To prepare the sauce, first heat butter in a pan.  Add in the garlic and chilies. Saute.

Next, add in the onions and saute. Cook until the onions turn translucent.

Add the chicken broth next and mix.

Add in the cream and mix. Let the mixture come to a simmer.

Add in the coriander leaves next and mix well.

Sprinkle garam masala and nutmeg and mix well.

Next, add in the chicken breasts and the garlic cloves along with any cooking juices that would have come out while cooking the chicken breasts. Make sure the breasts are properly covered by the sauce.

Serve hot with your favorite rice for a scrumptious lunch or dinner. 

Frequently Asked Questions

What Else Can I Add to the Chicken in Cream Sauce?

I kept the dish simple and used only chicken and the creamy sauce as the hero ingredients. If you want, you can also add in some diced veggies of your choice to make the dish more filling and nutritious. 
I love adding carrots, zucchini, broccoli, bell peppers and onions to the sauce. They just work so wonderfully along with the flavors of the dish and complement the chicken too. top view of chicken in cream sauce

How Do I Store the Leftovers?

Your leftovers can last for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. I would recommend storing them in an airtight container to keep them fresh and then reheating them in the microwave or in a small saucepan over low heat.side view of chicken in cream sauce

Tips & Tricks to Make the Chicken in Cream Sauce

Ready to give this easy recipe a try? Here are some tips and tricks you might want to take note of.

  • I used cream and butter to add some richness to the dish but if you want some extra creaminess, you could also add some coconut cream or cashew cream into the mix. 
  • Evaporated milk is another great addition to the sauce- it can thicken the sauce and at the same time, make it rich and creamy too. 
  • I would recommend marinating the chicken for at least 30 minutes if not longer. Overnight marination will give you the best texture and flavor, so try to opt for that/ 
  • I have used chicken breast for this recipe but you could also try the same recipe with other cuts of chicken like chicken thighs if you want some tender juiciness, or even chicken legs. 
  • To add some extra spice to this chicken in cream sauce, you can also add some crushed red pepper flakes into it. 
  • I would also recommend adding a generous squeeze of lime or lemon juice to the dish to bring out the other flavors and lend a bit of acidity to the sauce. 
  • Depending on your personal preference, you can use either a non-stick pan or a cast iron skillet to cook the chicken and prepare the sauce.

Serving Ideas & Suggestions

This chicken in cream sauce tastes best when paired with some flat bread or rice. I would recommend sticking to plain steamed  rice to go with this to enjoy the perfect flavors of the chicken curry.
