Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Use Fresh Dumplings Instead?

You sure can! Fresh dumplings, ideally scratch made ones are even better in terms of flavor and deliciousness, and are healthier too. You can try out a lot of different fillings with different kinds of protein and veggies depending on what you have at hand. Yummy fried dumpling with spicy sauce

What Else Can I Add to the Spicy Sauce?

To lend the spicy sauce a bit of nuttiness and extra flavor, add a touch of toasted sesame oil into it. Remember to use this in moderation, since the flavor of sesame can easily overpower other flavors.
For an extra earthy flavor, add some ground or julienned ginger into the sauce.Zoom in image of fried dumpling with spicy sauce

What Can I Use Instead of Oyster Sauce?

Oyster sauce isn’t an essential part of the recipe, but it does lend a nice depth of flavor and richness to the spicy sauce. You can skip it altogether or use any other Asian sauce like Hoisin sauce, Teriyaki sauce or even some Worcestershire sauce as an alternative.

Can I Prep the Sauce in Advance?

You sure can! This flavorful sauce can be made in a big batch and stored for later too. Just transfer the sauce in a glass jar and refrigerate it for up to 2 weeks. Top view image of fried dumpling with spicy sauce

What Can I Do With the Leftover Dumplings and Spicy Sauce?

Got some leftovers? You can whip up an easy soup with some veggie or chicken stock, chopped veggies, throw in the dumplings and then top it with the spicy sauce to lend the soup that extra pop of flavor and deliciousness. Super zoom in image of fried dumpling with spicy sauce

Tips & Tricks to Make the Fried Dumpling with Spicy Sauce

The recipe may be super easy to make, but take note of these tips and tricks to make sure you nail it!

  • The ketchup in the spicy sauce is meant to balance out the flavors and give it that bulkiness and consistency you’re looking for.
  • Don’t forget to add a nice sprinkle of some fresh herbs to the spicy sauce- it can really elevate the flavor and lend the sauce a nice pop of color too. You can use chopped coriander, dill or even some chopped scallions if that’s what you have at hand.
  • To tone down the flavor of the spicy sauce, you can add some finely chopped canned tomatoes into the mix.
  • Want to lend the sauce a bit more heat? Add some red pepper flakes and some crushed black peppercorns into the mix.
  • If you don’t want to pan fry the dumplings, you can steam them too! Use a steamer basket or just microwave them after sprinkling a bit of water over them- most packaged dumplings usually cook well in the microwave too!
