Coin paratha, also known as coin parotta, is a delicious and versatile layered flatbread that has its origins in India, just like the humble naan.

This delicious flatbread recipe is a must try because it is super easy to make, tastes absolutely fantastic and can be enjoyed in so many different ways.

Ingredients For the Recipe

You’ll need just 5 simple ingredients to try this easy coin paratha recipe.

  • Whole wheat flour: 1 cup
  • Salt: A pinch
  • Water: As required
  • Egg: 1
  • Oil: 1 tbsp
  • Oil: For greasing and rolling

How to Make the Coin Paratha

Once you have all the ingredients ready, here’s the step by step process you’ll need to follow to make the coin parathas.

In a mixing bowl, add all the ingredients apart from water. Mix. 

Next, add water little by little and knead the flour into a smooth dough. 

Apply oil on the dough and cover it and let it rest for at least 15 minutes.

Next, take a small portion of the dough and grease it with oil. Roll it out as thin as you can. It is okay if it tears. You may need to use a lot of oil in order to roll it out thin.

Next, join the longer sides and make it into a long thin rope like structure.

Then roll the elongated dough into a ball. 

Press with your hands to flatten it out.

Next, heat a flat pan or tawa. Transfer the flattened dough onto the pan and cook each side for 3-4 minutes over a low to medium flame.

What Else Can I Add to the Coin Paratha?

Our recipe for the coin parathas is super simple and straightforward, but if you’re in the mood to experiment, you can try bringing in some variation to these parathas too.
- Add some chopped spinach or fenugreek leaves into the dough to make the coin parathas healthier.
- To make these parathas more flavourful, you can also add some seasonings of your choice. Chopped garlic, chopped green chilies and chili powder are some good choices.top view of coin paratha

How Do I Store the Leftovers?

The best way to store your leftover coin parathas is to transfer them to an airtight container or a ziploc bag until you’re ready to reheat them.

Can I Prep the Coin Parathas in Advance? 

Yes you can! Just like regular parathas, you can make the coin parathas in a big batch, half cook them on the heated pan, allow them to cool down and store them in an airtight container.

Tips & Tricks to Make the Coin Paratha

Before you jump in and give this recipe a shot, here are some additional tips and tricks that can help you nail it.

  • We’ve used whole wheat flour for the recipe, but you can use all purpose flour or multigrain flour too.
  • Remember that depending on the kind of flour you’re using, the texture of the parathas will be different. You can also use a half and half mixture of whole wheat and all purpose flour if you want to.
  • The egg is added to this mixture to soften the parathas and lend them a nice flavor. If you’re a vegetarian, you can skip adding the egg and use some yogurt or milk instead.
  • If you’re a vegan, you can use an egg replacer or just plain water and a bit of extra oil to prepare the dough for the coin parathas.
  • We’ve used oil for the dough and to grease and roll the parathas, but if you want, you can use ghee instead. It’ll actually lend the parathas an amazing flavor.
  • To make the parathas extra crispy and crunchy, you can spread some oil or ghee on both the sides before you cook them on the heated pan.
  • Make sure you use a good quality non-stick pan or a cast iron skillet to cook the coin parathas. 
  • Also remember to keep the heat medium so that the parathas are all cooked from the inside too.
  • To finish it all up, top the coin parathas with a sprinkle of chopped coriander leaves.
